The new scripted ensemble drama series DTLA will premier on Logo this October. It’s been 7 years since the last episode of Queer as Folk, 6 since Noah’ Arc wrapped up, and about 4 since The L Word stopped ordering more seasons. I know, almost every single TV show on the air currently has at least one LGBT character. Whether we’re profiled as forever fabulous and witty or dangerously vulnerable and oppressed, let’s face it, we’re everywhere. Like… have you seen The New Normal, Glee or Modern Family? Television really has come a long way! With so many queers prancing around in television sprinkling glitter everywhere, why does it matter if we get another all-gay cast show?
Two Wednesdays ago I went to The Abbey in West Hollywood to grab a few Blue Moons with my friends. Perfect mid-week reliever. I made a new friend that evening. She is the sweetest girl and an Associate Producer for the show. She also graduated from my alma mater earlier this year. At that point, it was only a matter of days until Logo would make the official announcement that her show was scheduled for national broadcasting. It was one of the few moments in my life that I felt truly happy and proud of someone I had just met. This is exactly what dreams are made of!
It is important that we get another all-gay cast show because variety is beautiful. Logo is a network that narrowcasts to a more progressive audience – LGBT or otherwise. This is a show that was conceived, written, produced and financed with the immense support of the growing and caring community that supports equality. The show will challenge and perpetuate notions in our current times while bringing awareness of the many issues that we face as human beings, not just as members of a specific group anymore. I commend NBC, ABC and FOX for showing their support with their LGBT story lines. However, there is always room for a new perspective on things, told by individuals who worked with passion and not a multi-million dollar contract. DTLA is the first independent scripted TV series to get national broadcast distribution raising their funds on the widely-known fundraiser service, Kickstarter.
The series will premier on Wednesday, October 24th at 11 PM ET/PT on Logo. CLICK HERE to watch the trailer.
